Writer vs. Author by Larry Yoakum
Writer Vs. Author
I have been asked by several of my readers what is the difference between an author and a writer. That question got me thinking. I address this in one of my YouTube videos. But, I'll paraphrase it a bit here.
To me, a writer is a broader idea. You can write books, you can write music, you can write wrongs, you can write data for your company website. An author, though, is a specific, specialized sort of writer. You then can delve into the realm of novelist vs. author, but I don't think I'll do that at this particular point in the space/time continuum.
I've known people who write music, and they're very good at it. They write songs like I write stories. They'll say to me, "It's cool you can write a story like that. I could never be that creative." And I tell them I feel the same way about their ability to write music. It isn't something my mind can piece together, yet creating a story is natural to me. It just goes to show you that everyone has a different talent and personal perspective on their own abilities. If they're good at something, to them it just seems natural and not a big deal, but to those of us outside their brains, it is pretty dang cool.
I consider myself to be an author. To be more specific, I call myself underground indie author. I'm not underground in the style of political opinions and the like, but underground as in I am not as well known as I'd like, and besides, I think it makes me sound awesome. I write in a mixed genre of horror, paranormal, fantasy, and sci-fi. Maybe one day I'll branch out and write something about life and love or childhood dreams or puppies or an autobiography, but, until then, I'll stick to what I'm good at.
For those of you who have taken the time to read this, I thank you. I hope I didn't ramble too much. I sometimes do that. Until next time, fare thee well gentle reader and in my own words, "I was once crazy, but the world drove me sane."
About the Author
Larry Yoakum III. Underground Indie Author. I am from the town of Valley Center, Kansas and currently live in Dallas with my amazing wife Allison. I am an Air Force veteran and the founder of a veterans brotherhood in the DFW area. A lot of my writing takes place in or otherwise related to a fiction version of the town. It is a nexus that attracts paranormal activity, and on occasion produces portals to other times, dimensions, or just five blocks down the road. All of my work is in a shared universe full of horror, the paranormal, supernatural, fantasy, magic, and just a touch of science fiction. I am always working on stories to amuse and abuse the public.
My personal website is Larry's Office at larryyoakum3.webs.com and on that site you can find links to my Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, LinkedIn, YouTube Video Channel, and Amazon Author Page.
